What is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) ?

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test is developed for Japanese learners all over the world in order to evaluate and certify their Japanese-language proficiency.

How often is the JLPT held?

Once a year. Normally on the first Sunday of December.

Starting from 2009, JLPT will be held twice, in July (for levels 1 and 2 only) and in December (for levels 1-4) at the following countries/areas: Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Other countries remain unchanged.

Are there any special qualifications needed to take the JLPT ?

The JLPT is open to all non-native Japanese speakers. There are no age restrictions on candidates taking the JLPT.

Can physical disabled take the JLPT?

Yes. The applicant has to notify us in advance for special arrangement.

Which level should I take ?

The JLPT has four different levels of difficulty. Level 1 is the highest level and
level 4 is the lowest level. Please refer to the contents, criteria, and past papers of the JLPT. click here

How is the test level equivalent to the school grade in Japan?

The standard is different. It cannot be compared.

What is the format of the test ?

The test is made up of three sections: writing-vocabulary; listening; reading-grammar. All answers are in multiple choice. You can refer to The Japan Foundation .

What is the syllabus of the test ?

What score do I need to obtain in order to pass the JLPT?

A decision of pass or fail will be given only to those examinees who take all three sections of the test. The passing score is determined by the Test Administrative Committee every year, and is usually set at 70% or higher for Level 1, and 60% or higher for Level 2, 3, 4. In some instances, it may be adjusted downward.

If I pass the JLPT, can I enter the Japanese university?
